fr Phénomène de dissipation d’énergie sous forme de chaleur, ayant pour conséquence un décroissement de l’amplitude d’oscillation. Ce phénomène existe dans tous les matériaux, aussi bien les sols et roches, que ceux utilisés pour la construction (béton, métal, bois, etc.), et peut être particulièrement fort en cas de grandes déformations; on parle alors d'amortissement interne, qui peut être visqueux ou hystérétique. Il peut également provenir du frottement au contact entre deux éléments (assemblages, joints, etc.): on parle alors souvent d'amortissement externe.
