In plate tectonics: the process that makes one plate (the slab) moves under another (the upper plate) and sinks into the mantle beneath it. This process results in a convergent movement of the two involved plates which is known to generate earthquake ruptures of different types.

Il peut s’agir de deux plaques océaniques entre elles ou d’une plaque océanique et d’une plaque continentale. Les zones de subduction ont une topographie aux forts reliefs positifs et négatifs et sont le siège d’une activité géologique importante.
