Entry: International Geomagnetic Reference Field Model (IGRF)

URI: https://terra-vocabulary.org/ncl/FAIR-Incubator/earthsciencesensors/c_53801190

Standard and international mathematical description of the Earth's main magnetic field. The Internal field (main field) is modelled in spherical harmonics up to degree/order 13 from 1900.0 onwards with a time resolution of 5 years interval. An international task force, under the auspices of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy Working Group (namely IAGA division V Working Group \"V-MOD: Geomagnetic Field Modeling\"), produces a new generation of the IGRF. Thus, it is the product of a collaborative effort between magnetic field modellers and the institutes involved in acquiring, collecting and disseminating magnetic field data from satellites, observatories and surveys around the world. IGRF is used widely in studies of the Earth's deep interior, its crust, its ionosphere and magnetosphere as well as by industrial stakeholders for navigational applications, oil and mining exploration, etc.
